There was no...

We had simply planned to track down one of his many mug shots and add it to our site's large collection.

Thoroughly engrossing background-check of James Frey's supposedly non-fiction best-seller "A Million Little Pieces" by thesmokinggun.com.

If you need other ins to the 6 page recount:

Frey has become something of a literary rock star, attracting crowds at book signings that jam stores to capacity and prompt comparisons to established draws like David Sedaris and Dave Eggers.

He has said that the film [version] is being directed by Mark Romanek.

Some fun pics sprinkled throughout, particularly page 2's '88 yearbook photo/chicken-pox laden visage combo.

As far as literary hoaxes go, Frey's beefed-up malfeasance history and assorted fibbery is no match for stuff like this. Frey is The Jamie Kennedy Experiment to Savannah Knoop & Laura Albert's Sacha Baron Cohen.

For the record, fiction or non-, I thought AMLP was pretty good. I tried to hate it because Frey was off-the-charts jerkassy in a lot of interviews around the book's initial release, though that was likely mostly an act.

Hayden Christensen should play him in the Romanek film.

So the movie will cost EIGHT HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS to make?

Salon weighs in.

"So let the haters hate, let the doubters doubt, I stand by my book, and my life, and I won’t dignify this bullshit with any sort of further response." -Jimmy Frey

Regardless of your interest in this "JT Leroy" hoax stuff, check out this Salon piece (by Ayelet Waldman, Michael Chabon's wife) for the wild penile quotes at the bottom of page 1.

Televised Programming Bulletin: Frey is on Larry King Live tonight. That's an awesome show.
